Description

Capturing the perfect landscape shot often requires a bit of patience, luck and occasionally battling to scrape ice off your car.

This winter scene at Mount Buffalo National Park was the reward at the end of a very cold day. The morning began with my car completely frozen over, requiring a windshield scraping session just to get on the road. For most of the day, it seemed the effort might have been in vain. A dense, unrelenting fog had blanketed the mountain, completely obscuring Cathedral Rock and reducing visibility to near zero.

Photography is often a waiting game, and in this case, the persistence paid off. Just as the afternoon was fading, the thick fog finally began to lift, revealing a narrow window of opportunity right around sunset.

I hiked up through the fresh, crunchy snow from a brief overnight flurry to capture this moment. The dramatic granite peaks of Cathedral Rock finally emerged from the rolling mist, beautifully illuminated by the soft, warm hues of the setting sun. The surrounding alpine landscape was entirely transformed, with every boulder and low lying shrub coated in a delicate glaze of ice.
