The 99 Bends is the famous winding descent on the Lyell Highway just outside Queenstown on the West Coast of Tasmania. It’s the steep, twisty section between Queenstown and Gormanston, with a stack of tight hairpins that drop you down into the valley. Despite the name, it’s more of a nickname than a literal count—but it definitely feels like bend after bend when you’re driving it.
What makes it stand out is the scenery: exposed, pale rock and the famously bare hills around Queenstown shaped by the area’s long mining history near Mount Lyell, with greener rainforest not far beyond. There are a few pull-over spots where you can safely stop for photos.
