Description

Description

Photographed at Lake Lonsdale on January 20th 2026, with the Grampians peaks on the horizon. This image captures an aurora australis (Southern Lights) display over the lake. Auroras can occasionally be seen from parts of southern Australia during periods of strong geomagnetic activity. However a scene with an aurora this strong is very rare, previously happening only once or twice a year. Beams dancing across the sky could be seen by the naked eye. A night to remember!
