Lake Ballard is a huge salt lake that feels like you’ve arrived on another planet. Situated just north of Kalgoorlie near the old mining town of Menzies. Most of the time it’s a flat, cracked white expanse stretching to the horizon. After rain it can turn into a thin mirror that reflects the sky like polished glass. The lake is best known for Antony Gormley’s Inside Australia installation. Dozens of metal figures stand scattered across the salt pan, making it a surreal place to wander at sunrise or sunset when the sun casts long shadows.
