Description

A spot on the Waterfall Way road trip that is not to be missed. New England National Park feels like stepping into an ancient world. The forest is thick with Antarctic beech and rainforest pockets, and in the damper sections the branches look draped in moss and lichen. In the cooler months, fog rolls through the gullies and clings to the canopy, giving the place a moody and beautiful feel. Even short walks feel moody and immersive, with damp earth underfoot, filtered light overhead, and hardly anyone around.

The Cascades walking track in New England National Park is a 5.7 km return rainforest loop that drops off the plateau and winds down into the Five Day Creek valley, usually taking around 2.5 to 3 hours. The mood is ancient and unreal. With giant king ferns, mossy boulders, and that soft creek sound.
